Every new acronym means yet further progress in the broadcast industry

Every new acronym means yet further progress in the broadcast industry : What’s in a name?  What’s the difference between an acronym and an initialization? An acronym is when the first letter of the full name or phrase is used to create a new word that you actually pronounce. So words like NASA and laser are included in that group (so is GIF for that matter, but that’s a can of worms we don’t want to open…). On the other hand, an initialization is a phrase that has been shortened to its first letters, and you say them individually: VIP, ATM and DVD, for instance. Or BRB, DND, CBA. Regardless of whether it’s acronyms or initializations though (and some that can be argued as both, see for instance the ‘scutee’ versus Es See Tee Eee debate…), there can be no doubt – the broadcast industry is packed with them. Of course, specialist language is part and parcel of every industry and niche interest, but in the broadcast industry it seems particularly egregious: why do engineers love naming ...

NOA Participates in FIAT-IFTA 2022 : AV digitizing and archiving specialist NOA GmbH is gearing up to attend this year’s FIAT/IFTA Conference in Cape Town, Oct. 4–6. The October gathering, which sports the theme “Archives Out of the Box,” marks FIAT’s first in person event in almost three years and will bring the world of media archiving professionals together under one roof. Under the theme, organizers intend to spotlight the evolution of the archivist’s task and the important role they play in the structure of media organizations. “With this topic, we don’t just literally mean the travelling of archive material outside of the archive space, but also, in the figurative sense, the liberation from clichés such as ‘old’ and ‘irrelevant,’ said the organizers. “We even refer to the emancipation of the archivist, who has become an important partner in the decision-making process of media organizations, or — in the case of audiovisual archives outside broadcasting – an appreciated curator...

Why revolution and evolution are not mutually elusive in technology?

Why revolution and evolution are not mutually elusive in technology? : Why revolution and evolution are not mutually elusive in technology?   The world of business always has an appetite for business buzzwords. Two popular but polarising concepts are that of ‘disruptive innovation’ versus ‘incremental improvement’. But at Bridge Technologies, we’ve been thinking – why does it have to be one or the other?   From a disruptive innovation perspective, we count ourselves as one of the earliest and staunchest supporters for the idea of broadcast over IP. Even 15 years ago when the concept was largely alien, we saw the potential of ‘disrupting’ how things were done, and we worked tirelessly from that point to hasten a real paradigm and mindset change in the industry.   We did the same again with our VB440, where we saw the incredible potential that network data – presented intuitively – holds not only for diagnostic engineers, but also for creatives. Through the power of IP – which all b...

Content Supporting Connection at Trade Shows

Image
Content Supporting Connection at Trade Shows : Let’s meet at IBCShow 2022 Well-crafted content serves the purpose of forming the basis of connection. But it’s just one piece of the puzzle. Content is still going to be fundamentally hampered by two particular qualities: its digital nature, and its one-to-many format. Ultimately, whilst content is an important cornerstone of any marketing strategy, it can only ever support – not replace – one-to-one, in-person connection. In essence, you have to connect to become connected. That’s why trade shows remain one of the biggest points of focus for us at Xpresso – and why we’re so glad they have returned after a two year hiatus. Being on the trade show floor with our clients – meeting their customers, keeping abreast of their developments and advising them on strategy before, during and after is a crucial part of what we do – and a part we love. Connections are often forged and strengthened in informal settings, swapping holiday stories over ...
