Every new acronym means yet further progress in the broadcast industry

Image
Every new acronym means yet further progress in the broadcast industry : What’s in a name?  What’s the difference between an acronym and an initialization? An acronym is when the first letter of the full name or phrase is used to create a new word that you actually pronounce. So words like NASA and laser are included in that group (so is GIF for that matter, but that’s a can of worms we don’t want to open…). On the other hand, an initialization is a phrase that has been shortened to its first letters, and you say them individually: VIP, ATM and DVD, for instance. Or BRB, DND, CBA. Regardless of whether it’s acronyms or initializations though (and some that can be argued as both, see for instance the ‘scutee’ versus Es See Tee Eee debate…), there can be no doubt – the broadcast industry is packed with them. Of course, specialist language is part and parcel of every industry and niche interest, but in the broadcast industry it seems particularly egregious: why do engineers love naming ...

NOA Participates in FIAT-IFTA 2022

Image
NOA Participates in FIAT-IFTA 2022 : AV digitizing and archiving specialist NOA GmbH is gearing up to attend this year’s FIAT/IFTA Conference in Cape Town, Oct. 4–6. The October gathering, which sports the theme “Archives Out of the Box,” marks FIAT’s first in person event in almost three years and will bring the world of media archiving professionals together under one roof. Under the theme, organizers intend to spotlight the evolution of the archivist’s task and the important role they play in the structure of media organizations. “With this topic, we don’t just literally mean the travelling of archive material outside of the archive space, but also, in the figurative sense, the liberation from clichés such as ‘old’ and ‘irrelevant,’ said the organizers. “We even refer to the emancipation of the archivist, who has become an important partner in the decision-making process of media organizations, or — in the case of audiovisual archives outside broadcasting – an appreciated curator...

Why revolution and evolution are not mutually elusive in technology?

Image
Why revolution and evolution are not mutually elusive in technology? : Why revolution and evolution are not mutually elusive in technology?   The world of business always has an appetite for business buzzwords. Two popular but polarising concepts are that of ‘disruptive innovation’ versus ‘incremental improvement’. But at Bridge Technologies, we’ve been thinking – why does it have to be one or the other?   From a disruptive innovation perspective, we count ourselves as one of the earliest and staunchest supporters for the idea of broadcast over IP. Even 15 years ago when the concept was largely alien, we saw the potential of ‘disrupting’ how things were done, and we worked tirelessly from that point to hasten a real paradigm and mindset change in the industry.   We did the same again with our VB440, where we saw the incredible potential that network data – presented intuitively – holds not only for diagnostic engineers, but also for creatives. Through the power of IP – which all b...

Content Supporting Connection at Trade Shows

Image
Content Supporting Connection at Trade Shows : Let’s meet at IBCShow 2022 Well-crafted content serves the purpose of forming the basis of connection. But it’s just one piece of the puzzle. Content is still going to be fundamentally hampered by two particular qualities: its digital nature, and its one-to-many format. Ultimately, whilst content is an important cornerstone of any marketing strategy, it can only ever support – not replace – one-to-one, in-person connection. In essence, you have to connect to become connected. That’s why trade shows remain one of the biggest points of focus for us at Xpresso – and why we’re so glad they have returned after a two year hiatus. Being on the trade show floor with our clients – meeting their customers, keeping abreast of their developments and advising them on strategy before, during and after is a crucial part of what we do – and a part we love. Connections are often forged and strengthened in informal settings, swapping holiday stories over ...

IBC2022 is upon us once again and this year. Bridge Technologies have big plans

Image
IBC2022 is upon us once again and this year. Bridge Technologies have big plans : BC2022 is upon us once again and this year (as every year) we have big plans. IBC-RAI-AmsterdamFor those of you who keep up with our blogs and content, you’ll know already about ‘The Bridge Show’. We launched this during lockdown, ostensibly as a way to keep in contact with our customers, business partners and industry peers. But it served a (not-so) secret second function; it allowed us to not only talk-the-talk in the field of IP production and distribution, but to actually walk-the-walk. Putting out a full-scale studio production every week using Bridge Technologies tools gave us unrivalled insight into what our customers need and want, and allowed us to adapt our offerings accordingly. And since so much of our technology is about making data meaningful and usable through intuitive visualisation, it makes sense that when it comes to something like IBC where we have the chance to actually show au...

CyanView to Introduce RIO Live at IBC 2022

Image
CyanView to Introduce RIO Live at IBC 2022 : RIO Live is a camera-mounted addition which facilitates shading and tally across a diverse range D-Cinema cameras, camcorders and mirrorless cameras in multi-camera live productions such as concerts, theater plays or fashion shows.   The RIO Live unit can be coordinated with an extensive range of cameras in order to facilitate remote control. The diverse range of cameras supported and the flexible connection options available provide producers and creatives both in Broadcast and ProAV markets with the ability to deploy complex camera setups; this is fundamental when using large sensor D-Cinema cameras with PL zoom lenses and 3D LUTs, and ensures that a specific, consistent look – usually achieved in post-production – can be secured across the cameras, even in live productions and whilst streaming.   The RIO Live unit further allows for the control of zoom lenses and lens motors, including B4 box lenses, PL zoom lenses, Canon Cine Servos ...

NOA Celebrates 15 Years of Collaboration with National Library of Finland : AV digitizing and archiving specialists NOA GmbH continues to provide support to Finland’s National Library, which boasts a large collection of historical resources and Finnish publications. The organization is responsible for the collection, description, preservation and accessibility of Finland’s printed national heritage and the unique collections under its care. Geared to researchers, students and all who are interested in the resources of the National Library of Finland, the organization has opted to continue work with NOA after 15 years of excellent collaboration. The audio digitization unit is in Mikkeli, where library’s digitisation facilities are located. As a big audio archive the library faced the task of how to preserve the fragile audio collection, which is growing year by year – a typical destiny of a national library receiving donations. The library decided to form a dedicated audio mass digiti...

Image
ARET Launch Flag-based Corner Cam at IBC 2022 : ARET – a leading provider of integrated video and audio solutions – will be using IBC (Booth O.A05) to demonstrate their new Corner Cam, an integrated corner flag and camera for deployment in football (soccer) matches. The camera, a collaboration between ARET and sports equipment manufacturers LISKI, will integrate Dream Chip’s AtomOne mini AIR, a miniaturised camera with established pedigree in the sports market.   ARET’s aim was to develop a robust camera which could immerse audiences in the action, providing an unusual vantage point from which to view the action, whilst also providing referees with an additional technical perspective to aid decision making. They achieved this by combining LISKI’s robust, flexible and UEFA/FIFA-certified poles with a micro AtomOne mini AIR camera.   The AtomOne mini AIR camera, which has seen previous deployment in a range of sports environments, is based on Sony’s IMX174 image sensor, and thus prov...

Bridge Technologies Will Demo Release 6.1 at IBC 2022

Image
Bridge Technologies Will Demo Release 6.1 at IBC 2022 : Bridge Technologies today announce their participation in this September’s IBC (Booth 1.A71), where they will be demonstrating their powerful range of broadcast monitoring solutions, with a particular focus on supporting broadcasters in their transition to IP production and delivery. Bridge will be using the opportunity to give the first public demonstration of their new 6.1 software solution harmonising the full suite of Broadcast IP probes, along with SCTE 104/35 marker monitoring, and the award-winning signal generation functionality. In relation to the 6.1 release, this integrates what was previously two separate components; namely probe and extractor software, and allows for both to be deployed across embedded, appliance or software solutions. This harmonisation is in keeping with the Bridge Technologies development philosophy, which seeks to maintain a consistent architecture across the entire suite of products, whilst c...

AETA Launches Scoop6 Compact Codec at IBC 2022

Image
AETA Launches Scoop6 Compact Codec at IBC 2022 : AETA Audio Systems is proud to announce the release of Scoop6 double IP mono codec, the latest product in a lineup of recent innovations from the audio and IP codec specialists. Scoop6 follows in the footsteps of the Scoop5s rackmount audio codec. The new unit is, however, more compact and allows users to combine many codecs into just one 19” rack unit, even squeezing into crowded MCRs as well as facilitating remote broadcast in OB vans, for example.   Like Scoop5s, Scoop6 supports multiple network interfaces such as two Ethernet ports as well as 4G and 5G connections, so it’s also adaptable for all types of broadcast applications.   Just half the size of a 19-inch rack unit, the Scoop6 codec offers redundant power supply for safety as well as any kind of audio I/Os with AES67 (Dante or Ravenna) as analog or AES3.
